Why is Guadalajara known as Mexico’s Silicon Valley?

There is only one Silicon Valley, and we know where that is. However, the US technology industry is growing in interest in Jalisco’s western state, specifically Guadalajara.

Its booming technology ecosystem attracts IT recruiters from Facebook, Google, Apple, Netflix, LinkedIn, and other tech giants. But why is this so?

Mexico has become the most important Latin American country for the IT industry because of its advantageous geographical location near the United States.

IT companies, large and small, see Mexico as the best option to source tech talent. The Guadalajara government has been aware of this and launched many campaigns to attract talent and IT Industries to its capital.

Since Guadalajara was chosen by the Federal Government and MIT to be the new Digital Creative City and gave the city significant funds to invest in building the infrastructure to host new IT Companies, the city became the core of Mexico’s IT software industry.

The ecosystem built over the years, and Guadalajara began to see the birth of many local medium-size companies, start-ups, development centers (in the likes of Silicon Valley success stories).

What are some tech companies in Guadalajara?

More than 600 tech companies and counting in Guadalajara have attracted over 115,000 IT workers. Some of the companies with a significant presence in Guadalajara are:

  • IBM
  • HP
  • Dell
  • Oracle
  • Intel
  • Freescale
  • Tata
  • Wipro
  • HCL
  • Luxoft
  • Ooyala
  • Wizeline
  • Freescale
  • Flextronics

  • Cisco

IBM has been in the region for over 40 years.

Where these tech companies source candidates from?

Guadalajara is considered the center of education in Western Mexico. There is a cluster of universities (both private and public) that offer excellent engineering, computer science, and electronics programs:

  • Tec de Monterrey
  • ITESO
  • UAG
  • UdeG

The government understands the importance of the industry, and this is one of the few states in Mexico that has a Minister of Innovation and Technology. Thus, Guadalajara alone educates about 9,000 software engineers each year, giving companies access to a vast talent pool of qualified candidates.

So, is Guadalajara the best nearshore location in Mexico?

It is one of the five best for sure. While Mexico City is one of the most influential financial cities in Mexico, the state of Jalisco has managed to become one important tech hub and attract multinational tech companies who want to capitalize on the sheer number of top tech talent available in the city.

Also, some of Mexico’s top tech events are in Guadalajara. Local Campus Party and Talent Land attract some of the best minds in the country.

How to find a staffing agency in Guadalajara?

When choosing a recruitment agency, you want to be confident that the one you choose is the best staffing agency to meet your company’s needs. General staffing agencies can staff for just about any business or industry out there, but they are usually limited when your company needs to hire specialized talent. Agencies that focus on specific sectors, like IT, will give you the best shot at top talent.
