The Basics

What is a Front End Developer?

At their core, front end developers are problem solvers and designers. Their focus is on the user experience when using a web page or application. They are tasked with figuring out the best way to structure and lay out text, interactive elements, visuals, and more. They have a wide spectrum of skills, most of which focus on the user interface and, therefore, the design and architecture of the layout of a website or web application.

Front end developers use web design through coding languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Key responsibilities for front end developers include:

  • Develop web applications and mobile sites with high usability and functionality
  • Solve functional problems and design glitches
  • Implement HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to support UX/UI principles
  • Integrate SEO planning and implementation in the design
  • Perform routine website maintenance and enhancements
  • Constantly test and create interfaces
  • Manage file systems, cloud storage, and network resources

Front End Developer Technologies

In order to create viable, functional, and appealing designs, front end developers use a combination of technologies and programming languages to bring an idea to life. Front end developers must also have a profound understanding of management systems like WordPress. The most commonly used technologies used by front end developers include:

  • HTML: HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is the core computer language used to design websites so that they are accessible via the internet. HTML composes a text file that indicates to a web browser how a page should be displayed.
  • CSS: CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is a rule-based language used to structure and style a text file. In other words, it helps a front end developer dictate how text is displayed on a page or interface. It is used in conjunction with HTML, as it is used to stylize and organize text and visual elements.
  • JavaScript: JavaScript is used in tandem with HTML and CSS to optimize the function of web pages and applications for the user. JavaScript is largely responsible for creating the interactive elements that make pages more navigable.

Leading Technologies used by Front End Developers

HTML and CSS

HTML is, of course, the standard markup language used to create web pages, so it’s kind of a basic building block to other front-end frameworks. CSS and HTML are basic Front End programming languages that help add materials to a website and style them how you want.

AngularJS, React or Vue

JavaScript frameworks that help create interactive and fluid experiences and effects in web and mobile interfaces.

LESS and SASS

Server-side pre-processing CSS platforms. They extend the capabilities of CSS and make writing style-sheets easier.

Jasmine and Mocha

JavaScript testing frameworks. They help test user interface components to make sure they are behaving as the developer wants.

jQuery

JavaScript Library has a collection of plugins and extensions that makes writing JavaScript easier by providing the developer with ready-made elements.
