When Stripe described its Ledger system in February 2024, the engineering problem went beyond processing a payment. The company needed a reliable way to account for money moving across systems whose records could arrive at different times and in different formats. Ledger gave teams a way to investigate missing, late or incorrect data and trace it back to the systems involved.
That work changes a hiring conversation. A backend engineer may need to reason through a retry without duplicating an operation. A data engineer may need to reconstruct a financial event. A reliability engineer may need to restore a service while preserving the information needed to understand what happened.
The fintech engineering roles that are hardest to fill combine a technical specialty with direct ownership of financial correctness: payments backend, SRE and platform, application security, financial data engineering and, when you build your own decision systems, fraud ML. No public dataset ranks them against each other. Scope, seniority and compensation decide which search is hardest for your team.
For US companies evaluating fintech developers in Mexico, the useful question is which of those responsibilities the next hire must already be able to carry, and where to look for evidence of that experience.
Why these roles become difficult to fill
Skills gaps are a broad hiring problem, not a fintech one. In the Linux Foundation's 2026 State of Tech Talent survey, 46% of respondents said difficulty finding candidates with the right skills is a hiring challenge that can delay projects. The sample was 400 people responsible for IT hiring, recruiting or training across industries.
Fintech narrows the search further. A strong backend engineer is not automatically someone who has protected a ledger through duplicate events. A cloud engineer may not have led recovery from a live payment incident. The specialty is common; the specialty plus ownership of money movement is not.
That is why a single ranking of "hardest roles" misleads. A payments engineer can be easy to find for a team that will teach the domain, and very hard to find for a team that needs production ownership in the first month. The difficulty sits in the responsibility, not the title.
Five fintech engineering roles to assess closely
The five roles below are listed by the work they carry, not ranked by scarcity. For each one, the useful questions are what makes the search harder and how to test the experience you actually need.

Payments backend engineers. The bar is keeping financial records correct through retries and duplicate events; Stripe's webhook documentation warns that events can arrive out of order or more than once. Test it with a payment request that times out, followed by a repeated event, and ask how they would find what happened, avoid a duplicate charge and reconcile the result.
SRE and platform engineers. The search narrows when cloud experience must include diagnosing and recovering a live failure, using signals such as latency, traffic, errors and saturation from Google's SRE monitoring guidance. Describe a failing payment dependency and ask what they would inspect, when they would escalate and how they would confirm recovery. Clarify whether the role builds a platform, operates services or both; for coverage, see how to how to build a site reliability engineering team in Mexico, and for cost ownership, you can consult the article FinOps agents in fintech.
Application and cloud security engineers. In ISC2's 2025 Workforce Study analysis, 30% of respondents whose organizations had skills needs struggled to find people with the required skills, across all industries. Ask the candidate to review a payment webhook, explain how a forged request could cause harm, and how they would verify and fix it. Treat application security, cloud security and governance as separate skills.
Financial data engineers. The job is keeping financial data complete and traceable when events arrive late or get corrected; a pipeline that runs is not enough if no one can explain its numbers. Describe a transaction that lands after the daily report and ask how they would detect, correct and document the change.
Fraud ML engineers. This role matters when you build or own your decision system, not when you rely on a vendor's fraud product. Stripe's fraud ML primer frames the core trade-off: blocking more fraud versus rejecting legitimate customers. Ask how they would evaluate a model change that does both, including the data, validation and monitoring they would need.

Where Mexico has relevant engineering depth
The case for fintech developers in Mexico rests on documented engineering work, not on a headcount of available specialists. Three employers show what that work looks like.
At Talent Land México 2025, Niu presented the technical choices behind the company's growth in Mexico. He described teams organized by business domain that make their own technical decisions, a microservices architecture, and investment in observability and resilience, all adapted to local regulatory requirements. Nu also credits local teams with designing and delivering Cajita Turbo, its high-yield savings feature, and calls its 2025 banking license a joint effort across engineering, product, analytics, legal and operations.
Capital One's Mexico City tech hub describes local engineers building products end to end, working in the cloud and following full-stack and DevOps career paths. It is a bank rather than a startup, but its work sits close to the payments and platform roles above.
BBVA's AI Factory expansion, announced in August 2024, added a Mexico center for data and AI products. The 230 new professionals it announced cover Mexico and Türkiye together, so the figure says nothing about Mexico alone.
Read together, these cases support a search for nearshore fintech engineers with backend, platform and data experience. They do not show how many matching candidates are open to a role, and they do not prove that any individual engineer has ledger or fraud experience. Application security is the thinnest area in this evidence; treat it as a targeted search.
The strongest practitioner examples here are in Mexico City. That reflects the cases available, not a national ranking. For the broader market, see the Mexico tech talent ecosystem.
How to assess the next hire
Use the same evidence for every candidate, in every country, and match it to the role's real responsibility.
- A production example the candidate personally owned. It shows their contribution, their decisions and where their responsibility ended.
- A failure or unexpected result. It shows how they diagnosed the problem, recovered and what changed afterward.
- A short scenario matched to the role. Use one of the exercises above. It shows whether their experience transfers to your financial workflow.
- A conversation with a product or risk counterpart. It shows whether they can explain technical choices and their operating consequences.
- A clear ramp-up plan. It shows which gaps can be learned on the job and who will support that learning.
Ask for sanitized explanations, not confidential artifacts from a previous employer. Set language, collaboration hours and production access by what the job actually requires.
Compensation belongs in the same calibration. The Tech Salaries Report 2026 gives broad-market medians for three of the roles above, pooled across seniority:

These are employees' take-home pay after Mexican income tax, from 10,246 responses collected July 2025 to March 2026. They are not gross salary, employer cost or fintech-specialist quotes, and respondent counts do not measure how many candidates are available. Price the specific scope you need, not the title alone.
If a search keeps missing the same requirement, revisit the requirement with engineering before adding sourcing volume. Our guide on how to recalibrate a specialized engineering search walks through that conversation.
