RouteGenie - Back End Engineer

About the Role

• We're looking for a Backend Developer to design and implement the server-side logic, APIs, and data processing that power the core applications of a U.S.-based SaaS platform serving the medical transportation industry across North America. You'll build reliable, high-performance systems and manage the database architecture that supports a growing platform used by hundreds of transportation providers.
• The role is 100% Remoto, based in México, working 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM PST.

About You

• You have 4+ years of professional backend development experience and you're highly proficient in Python, Django, and PostgreSQL.
• You design and build RESTful APIs with care, document them thoroughly, and collaborate closely with frontend developers on API contracts.
• You write clean, testable code, enforce SOLID principles, and take code quality seriously — in your own work and in code reviews.
• You communicate clearly in English, participate actively in standups and sprint planning, and surface blockers early.
• You're comfortable working asynchronously across time zones and aligned to PST working hours.

What You'll Be Doing

• Design and implement server-side logic and backend features using Python 3.x.
• Build and maintain robust RESTful APIs using Django REST Framework (DRF) with JSON serialization for efficient data exchange.
• Develop and optimize PostgreSQL schemas and complex SQL queries to power core application functionality.
• Manage MongoDB for geospatial data and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch for advanced search functionality.
• Manage background task workflows using Celery and Redis to handle asynchronous processing and long-running tasks.
• Integrate Python-based services with Twilio, Google Maps API, and OSRM to handle SMS, voice, and logistics logic.
• Maintain high code quality by writing unit and integration tests using pytest, the Django test framework, and Mock/patch for isolation.
• Enforce PEP 8 style guidelines and SOLID principles during code reviews.
• Debug and resolve production issues using Python-specific debugging techniques to minimize downtime.
• Identify and refactor performance bottlenecks with a focus on query optimization and efficient async programming.
• Partner with frontend developers on API contracts and document them using OpenAPI/Swagger.
• Manage local development environments using Docker and Docker Compose to ensure consistency across the team.

Technical Requirements

Must-Haves

• 4+ years of professional backend development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Python, Django, and PostgreSQL.
• Proven understanding of RESTful API principles and version control.
• Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests (pytest, Django test framework).
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
• Availability to work 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM PST.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with Celery and asynchronous Python programming.
• Familiarity with Docker, Docker Compose, and the AWS ecosystem.
• Background in multi-tenant SaaS, logistics, or healthcare software.
• Experience with MongoDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, or Redis.
• Familiarity with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation practices.
